Islam in Denmark

Imam Kaml Yousuf arrived in Denmark in September 1958 and started a regular Ahmadiyya Missin in March 1961. The first Danish convert was Abdus Salam Madsen. He wrote books an articles on Islam translated the Holy Qur’an to Danish and letters of congratulations arrived from among others king Feisal (Saudi Arabia), king Hussain (Jordan), shah Reza Pahlevi (Iran) and president Gamal Abdel Nasser (Egypt).

Shibzada Mirza Mubarak Ahmad visited Denmark for the first time in 1962 and then the Danish Jama’at already had 35 members. The first mosque in Scandinavia, located in Hvidovre, a suburb of Copenhagen, was inaugurated by Hadrat Mirza Nasir Ahmad, Khalifatul-Masih III, the 21st of July 1967 and the fund for its construction had been collected by Ahmadi women. The Mosque was named the Nusrat Djahan Mosque. The Ambassadors of India, Turkey and Pakistan took part in the inauguration festivities as well as Mayor of Copenhagen.

A reading of the Holy Qur’an took place in 1970 on the request of the Ambssdor of Egypt, and present were the ambassadors of Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Libya and Soviet Union. Representatives from the Embassies of Turkey and Iran were present as well.

The Danish Mission was also responsible for developing Ahmadiyyat in Iceland, Faroe Islands and Greenland.

Other prominent guest over the years in Copenhagen were for example Hadrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih IV. He visited Copenhagen in 1978 and 1982. Sir Muhammad Zafrullah Khan, Hadrat Syeda Mariam Siddiqa in 1987 and sahibzadi Amatul-Hafiz Begum in 1962.

The first Amir in Denmark was Nuh Svend Hansen who took office in 1985. The first Jalsa Salana in Denmark was held in 1975.

You can read even more about Ahmadiyyat in Denmark in the attached Swedish article, written by me and published in Aktiv Islam, Jubilee edition, printed 1990.
